Good Monday morning - circle Friday on your calendar.

That's the day the White House ballroom must stop rising. On August 7, the D.C. Circuit ruled 2-1 that above-ground construction halts on the 21st unless Congress authorizes it. Congress is on recess. Friday night the administration went to SCOTUS, and Chief Justice Roberts gave the challengers until tomorrow to respond.

Look how the argument has changed. The ballroom was sold as a place to host heads of state. It is now a national security structure. The Solicitor General describes a "totally secure ballroom space" inside an "integrated military complex." The President's Truth Social post Friday never used the word ballroom at all. Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll told the Court the building would act as a "sacrificial outer cover" absorbing a drone strike, and that its much-criticized height cannot be reduced without "catastrophic structural failure."

Beneath it is Washington's worst-kept secret: a bunker dating to FDR, where Cheney sheltered on 9/11. What's new is the scale - six stories, roughly 22,000 square feet. And nearly everything we know about it, the President disclosed himself, even while calling the preservationists who sued "TREASONISTS who revealed Top Military Secrets."

Here is what strikes me. After a year of litigation, almost nothing has addressed the obvious question: if not this, then what? Both courts let the bunker proceed regardless. So something will sit atop a six-story military complex beside the White House. Finish it? Shrink it? Cap it? Rebuild the East Wing? A museum?
