I was curious whether there'd be any backlash toward Graham Platner in Tuesday's Maine primary - votes cast for Governor Janet Mills, who suspended her campaign but remained on the ballot. The answer: not really. She got about 20% of the vote. Not much to read into that. None of it - the Nazi tattoo, the sexting, the intemperate Reddit posts, the disparaging of a fellow combat veteran - thwarted his momentum.
People keep reaching for the usual explanations. Outsider energy. Base politics. Voter anger. But as I said on radio yesterday, I think the real answer is simpler and more uncomfortable.
It's the bad boy theory.
There is a documented human phenomenon where someone looks directly at an obvious, undeniable flaw - sees it clearly, understands it completely - and says: yeah, okay. For now. Not forever. Not to bring home to mom. Just for the specific transaction at hand.
Taylor Swift named it. "I knew you were trouble when you walked in." That's not naivety. That's agency. She saw it. She went in anyway.
Maine Democrats saw it. They went in anyway.
The transaction they had in mind isn't: Graham Platner will be a statesman. It's: Graham Platner will make Susan Collins and Donald Trump uncomfortable in ways Janet Mills cannot. He has heat. He generates attention. In a media environment that runs on conflict, he is interesting.
That's the bet. It's not irrational. It's also not a bet on his character.
But here's what every bad-boy story eventually delivers in the third act: the chaos that made him magnetic in small doses becomes exhausting when it's the whole show. Just ask Charlie Sheen. His "Torpedo of Truth" tour sold out in minutes. Then Detroit booed him off stage.
Maine Democrats knew who he was when they walked in. Now comes the part where they find out if they were right.
