Michael's Daily Notes

Saturday night, New York City did something it hasn't done since 1973: it celebrated an NBA championship. Jalen Brunson scored 45, the Knicks closed out the Spurs in San Antonio, and for a few hours afterward, strangers in Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens — people who agree on nothing else — were high-fiving on subway platforms and honking horns in unison. It didn't matter what borough you were from, what you do for a living, or who you voted for. For one night, New York was one crowd. The ticker tape parade is Thursday.

Earlier that same day, three thousand miles west, I was at what would normally be called Levi's Stadium (apparently Levi’s didn’t want to ante up so FIFA covered the name) watching Qatar and Switzerland open their World Cup campaigns. Same phenomenon, different language. Maroon jerseys next to red ones in the same beer line. Strangers from Doha and Zurich comparing notes on the BART ride in. When Qatar's Boualem Khoukhi buried a stoppage-time equalizer for the country's first-ever World Cup point, half the stadium — including plenty of neutrals — erupted like it was their own team.

Hence I am into the World Cup. It’s a global mingle.

Writers have long made the case that big sporting moments are some of the last truly common experiences left — events large enough that showing up together, or celebrating together, matters more than where you're from. A World Cup goal. A championship parade. My Bus No. 5, scaled up to a city or a stadium.

We don't need everyone to love soccer, or basketball. We need more Saturdays like this one.

A MESSAGE FROM COMCAST

Iran captain Mehdi Taremi says the ongoing war between Iran and the U.S. has overshadowed the joy of the World Cup, forcing his team to navigate travel disruptions, visa issues and heightened tensions as they begin tournament play in the host nation.

A new NBC News poll finds 78% of Americans say the American Dream is harder to attain, only 33% are extremely proud to be American, and a majority believe the nation's best days are behind it as the U.S. nears its 250th birthday.

As the 2026 World Cup unfolds in the United States, critics argue that concerns over immigration policies, civil liberties, fan access, and political repression have not drawn the same international scrutiny that accompanied tournaments hosted by Russia and Qatar.

Despite remaining the clear frontrunner in a new Democratic primary poll, former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Gov. Gavin Newsom have both lost support since last year as voters increasingly spread their backing among a broader field of potential 2028 contenders.

As America marks its 250th anniversary, a massive stainless-steel time capsule packed with artifacts, messages, DNA-encoded copies of historic documents, and items from every state and territory will be buried at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia to preserve a snapshot of the nation for future generations, to be unearthed on July 4, 2276.
