Michael's Daily Notes
|
Today the Knicks will parade through the Canyon of Heroes celebrating their first title in fifty-two years. Millions on the streets, a record police presence. Mingling at its best: strangers from every background cheering the same thing, no tribe, no ZIP code. The antidote to a disconnected society.
Cue the controversy. Owner James Dolan says the Knicks accepted a White House invitation. He's known Trump for thirty years. He was married at Mar-a-Lago. And it’s worth remembering: Trump attended Game 3 at the Garden and got booed loudly on the video board - the Knicks' only loss of the series. Some said he ruined the vibe. But he's been a courtside fixture there since the 1990s, long before politics. Adam Silver called him "a genuine Knicks fan." You can boo him. That doesn't make him a stranger to the building.
The White House visit itself has a longer history than people remember. Larry Bird skipped it in 1984 to sleep in. Jordan skipped his in 1991 to play golf. Then 2017 happened with Curry and the Warriors, and the tradition turned into a loyalty test. My own Eagles split their roster after the last Super Bowl - Hurts stayed home, Barkley went and got criticized, then said he respects the office, just as he respected Obama's.
So here's where I land. I like tradition, I like nonpartisan gatherings, and I like that Dolan said yes. The players should do whatever they want - go, stay home, boo at the Garden. Nobody should be compelled either way. Nate Bargatze went to the UFC on the South Lawn last week and is hearing it from some fans. I'm going to stop watching him...when he's no longer funny.
